Defending the Sexual Revolution

The Necessity of Excess by Pat Califa
I found this interesting five year old column from Counterpunch. It makes some very good points about sexual moralism and disease. Califa points out that if penicillin, not Victorianism, was what stopped syphilis, why do we think that sexual moralism and shame will stop AIDS and other STDs?

NYC To Promote Circumcision Among Gays

New York City) New York City’s Health Department is reportedly preparing a campaign promoting circumcision as a means of reducing HIV/AIDS among high risk groups.

The New York Times reports that the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene campaign is aimed at gay men, Hispanics and African Americans. The department began working on the campaign after the World Health Organization last month cited "compelling" evidence that circumcision can reduce their chances of contracting HIV by up to 60 percent. - 365gay.com

Circumcision

The UN is recommending circumcision to prevent HIV/AIDS in Africa. Studies show it can reduce the risk up to 60%. (Of course, that does not apply for gay sex.) I feel a bit conflicted about this. Personally, I hate circumcision and I'm still mad at my parents for mutilating me and robbing me of my natural sexual sensitivity. And are there any studies on what difference it would make if we actually put the kinds of money and resources towards safer sex education and other efforts that we should? Thoughts?
