Harvard Lambda Legal Conference to focus on Trans issues

The third annual Harvard Lambda Legal Advocacy (HaLLA) Conference will examine the interaction of the transgender community and the law. The panelists, leading activists, advocates and academics from around the country, will speak on topics including youth and families, sex-segregated public facilities, health care and employment.

This would be a great place to also talk about how "rights discourse" affects radical movements for change. This is an opportunity to question how advocacy work is moving forward, which things work to truly end violence against trans people and which things increase the power of the state.

Barney Frank Changed His Mind?

Update: Pressure from over 90 LGBT organizations has convinced Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi to delay a vote on ENDA. Rumor has it that the original language of ENDA that includes protections for transgender people will be restored. I am proud of our community for uniting around this issue to send a strong message that we will not support ENDA unless all of us are included. Contrary to previous reports, HRC has actually spoken in favor of one ENDA, albeit very quietly.

Now, call your representatives and tell them to support H.R. 2015!

Note to HRC: Fuck You!

The Human Rights Campaign (If only they actually fought for human rights!) and Barney Frank failed to stand up for Trans rights this week, and instead are taking a "two bill approach" to ENDA that will no doubt leave the transgender community legally unprotected from discrimination. Once again, I call on all LGBT/Queer people to stop all donations and speak out against HRC. Haven't we had enough of their pro-war endorsements and weak support of the trans community? HRC has always relied on others to lead, and in doing so has sold out our community time and time again. This issue is also a timely reminder that change must happen at the grassroots level. We cannot rely on our governmental and organizational leaders to actually lead.

ABC News 20-20 Barbara Walters Program on Transgender Children

ABC News 20/20 is broadcasting a program hosted by Barbara Walters this
Friday night, April 27 on transgender children and their families. The
program will feature three families who are supporting their transgender
children, ages 6, 10 and 16 who live in different parts of the U.S., and
some of the health providers who are working with these families. The
program also describes new findings from the Family Acceptance Project
about how family acceptance and rejection affects the health and mental
health of young people who are gender non-conforming.
