mr. heterosexual contest: queer kiss-in

An anti-gay "pastor" in Worcester is holding the Mr. Heterosexual Contest on Saturday Feb. 18th, in an effort to promote "gods plan: heterosexuality." His web site sells mugs that read "100% Hetero, Gods Plan." Ex-gay speakers will be featured.

The event will be held at Mechanics Hall in Worcester. A Queer Kiss-In has been called by local activists (Queer Nation?). QueerToday.com encourages people to attend the Queer Kiss-In and officially endorses this direct action.

I want pictures. Particularly if you can get into the event and capture the look on this guy's face.

On Feb 14, Pastor Tom said some very uninformed things about Darwin's Theory of Evolution: "The odds of Evolution having happened, or that we came from apes is so improbable that it is way beyond scientific probability." Well, as a Biologist, I can tell you that's not what Darwin at all. Darwin proposed (among other things) that humans and apes descended from a common ancestor. In the century and a half since biochemical science has confirmed a close genetic relationship between humans and other primates. Chimps and Bonobos are 99% similar to humans in their genomes.

Evolution is seen working now as bacteria have become resistant to most antibiotics by mutation and natural selection. Bacterial cells that mutate to resist an antibiotic survive exposure to it and proliferate, those that stay the same genetically die. Survival of the fittest is as simple as that. Substitute 20 billion years of local environmental conditions and other selective pressures for antibiotics, and the first life forms for modern bacteria, and you get all life on earth evolving to the current biosphere.

While Darwin did not understand genetics in the way we do now, modern biology has confirmed his theory and explained the molecular basis for how evolution probably occurred.

I would not trust Pastor Tom to have thought about homosexuality any more deeply than he has about the real science behind evolution.

Sorry, I should have said "3.5 Billion years..." for life's evolution on earth not "20 Billion years..." which is the approximate age of the universe. And I left out a verb and a comma or 2. My Bad! I was trying to be eloquent while watching TV. Oops!

Did anyone go to this? How was it?

Why is it good to be queer, but bad to be heterosexual? Isn't that hate speech or something?

I don't think anybody said that. The issue here is that there does not need to be a "Mr. Hetero" contest or "straight pride", because straight pride day is every day of the year. And also, the event was really about bashing queers and trying to get people to turn against us and our fight for liberation because "we could change if we really wanted to".
