HRC endorses republican again...
The Human Rights Campaign, the largest gay rights organization in the country, has endorsed a Republican in California costing the organization at least a million dollars in lost donations. This is not the first time HRC has endorsed republicans. They think it is wise to endorse republicans who are "pro gay" regardless of the person's stance on issues like war, health care, and women's rights. HRC fails to recognize that all of our struggles are intertwined and that issues like the war and women's rights are queer issues too. LGBT people need to wake up and realize that HRC does not represent our struggle for justice. When will the HRC let go of its harmful obsession with presenting the queer community as mainstream? Mark, I am wondering what you think of HRC's endorsements of democrats who aren't necessarily choosing anti-poverty, anti-racist or other anti-oppression stances with regards to some of these issues?
Thinking these things out,
WTTO
WTTO I would have to say if HRC endorsed a democrat who was "pro gay" but who was also very conservative in regards to women's rights for example, that I would have the same complaint....
I am not particularly fond of HRC in general, although I know they are more aligned with my goals and lines of thought than the true enemy of us all - the radical right.
It's a difficult line for me to straddle because on one hand I have a lot of complaints about their organization but on the other hand I think, especially in these times, we all need to remain united in our fight against the radical right.
I can more appreciate the way NGLTF works because they often bring up things like racism and women's rights. They also make an effort to organize in a more grass roots way. And, as exhibited at this years creating change conference they do take feedback and learn from it.
What do you think ?
HRC endorsed Joe Lieberman. EWWWWW!
